As Lawyers We consider important to give advice that any Spanish animal owner must face a serie of requirements which will permit them to own, care and take as much as obligations with their dogs without any problem in future.
In 1999 after being suffer many dogs attacks, the Spanish Cabinet meeting decided to pass into law the dangerous dog act. Ley 50/1999 that was applied in all the Country and invited to the rest of the Autonomic Regions to take part of it. Eventhough the National Law dated in 1999 it was modified in 2002 as well as in 2007 for its renew of requirements.
DO YOU HAVE your LICENCE of DANGEROUS BREEDS ? If you own any of this animals American Pit bull terrier, Pit bull terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier, Boxer, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottwelier, Dogo Argentino, Neapolitan Mastiff, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu, Akita Inu, Doberman and any Crossbreeds you can be sure that all of them belong to the potentially dangerous list. We advice you to go to your local AYUNTAMIENTO and ask about the requirements you have to face for obtaining the aforementioned licence as each region operates in a different way and have their own laws. A licence for your pet cost between 60 and 100 € and is valid up to 5 years and must be renewed furthermore you have to notice within 15 days of any change of the owner or pet. To apply for this licence owners must be legal aged, present the passport, the NIE or DNI, a Certificate of Physical fitness an Official Psychological certificate and a Certificate of Criminal Record. From the dog: the updated Vaccination Card, the Microchip certificate. Pet owners who do not have a licence would be punishable with fines of up to 3,000€.
In addition to, owners must also take out an Insurance policy for CIVIL and LIABILITY the minimun cover is 125,000€ (as we pointed before, please check this figure with your local Ayuntamiento). The cost for a yearly insurance would be approx. for 90€ .
GENERAL dog care: All pet owners must exercise their dogs 3 times a day and it is very important to mention that under no circumstances any person under age take them for a walk. In addition to they must be muzzled during the walk and it is the owner obligation to use a special leash and chain according to the weight of the animal. Finally We advice all dog owners to pick up their dog droppings to avoid any fine of your local Ayuntamiento.
